“After graduating from another university, I felt lost, [because] I really did not know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I did some research and decided that taking classes through the continuing education program was the best fit for me. It enabled me to take classes without the commitment of a graduate school program as I was not sure what I was interested in. I was also able to boost my grade point average (G.P.A.) giving myself a larger scope of options for graduate education that may have been limited before.”

“I took the pre-med. requirements: Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biochemistry as well as Microbiology. I was hesitant to try such demanding and difficult classes at Ohio State considering I had bad experiences with [the courses] in the past, but I found that Ohio State, although a large university, was well equipped to handle large class sizes. Organic Chemistry as well as Physics offered small recitation sections as well as lectures that allowed me to get one-on-one assistance with the classes. I believe that Ohio State gives every student a chance to better their grade with supplemental assignments like graded homeworks and quizzes, something that differed from my past college experiences. Overall, Ohio State exceeded my expectations, and I only wish I would have went there as an undergraduate!” |

“I must admit I was nervous to begin classes at such a large university, but I had one-on-one time with an advisor that was able to appease my concerns. She was very helpful in creating a schedule for me as well as making a list of the classes I needed to take to fulfill the pre-med. requirements. The Ohio State University Office of Continuing Education also offered an orientation for untraditional students. I also found this helpful as I had never used Carmen [an Internet site for students to view course materials, submit assignments, and check announcements from instructors] before.” |

“Dr. Badjic taught my Organic Chemistry classes, and I thought he was a great professor. Instead of using a PowerPoint as most professors did (at another university), he was a hands-on professor, using the blackboard to explain reaction mechanisms, etc. The class was a challenge, but I was able to get an ‘A’ as my notes and his expectations were always clear. I must add that my teaching assistants (T.A.s) for Organic Chemistry were a huge help in my getting an ‘A’; they knew the material, they were easy to understand, and they had a close relationship with Dr. Badjic so they also knew what his expectations for us were.
Dr. Callam was my Organic Chemistry lab professor, and he also exceeded my expectations. I must admit labs tend to make me nervous, but his procedures were very clear as well as his expectations for what we needed to know for the midterms. He was always willing to help as he answered my e-mails promptly and would answer my questions at anytime no matter when his office hours were!
My Physics 111 professor was amazing! I had dropped Physics at my previous university, so of all my classes, I knew this would be the most difficult. Mr. Smyser went out of his way to hold homework help sessions after class two days a week. Without that one-on-one help from him, I do not think I would have been able to get an ‘A.’ My T.A. that quarter as well as the one from Physics 113 made a difference in my understanding of physics. It was not that I was just getting a good grade; it was that I finally understood the concepts of physics.” |
 |
“My impression is that they really care about their students even though we are not degree-seeking or traditional students. I felt like with each quarter when I needed to schedule classes, my advisor (who switched three times) was always willing to help me by answering my e-mails promptly and overriding any prerequisite holds that would keep me from being able to add a class.” |

“I cannot describe to you the experience I have had at The Ohio State University. At another university, a lot of the professors discouraged me from attempting to go to medical school, but at Ohio State from the beginning, my very first advisor had hope and encouragement for me. My confidence has been fully restored in my academic future from these last few quarters at Ohio State. I know now that I am able to succeed in difficult classes and enter graduate studies with confidence!” |
