"It has been 30 years since I have attended any type of formal academic class, and that was high school. I never attended college or any other type of higher education, and I regret that ... even more now that I am attending classes. When I graduated high school, my plan was to be an administrative secretary and that was it. But, during that career, I had more and more responsibilities added to my job to the point that I was functioning in a professional capacity ... but without a degree. And I felt inferior to my colleagues and did not have any confidence in myself ….

My daughter graduated from high school last year and was starting college in the fall at The Ohio State University at Newark. My supervisor urged me to do something for myself like go back to school. With 20+ years of experience in my line of work, it's not that I HAD to have a degree, but she felt it would do a lot for my self-confidence. So I took the plunge but, after 30 years, knew I needed to ‘ease’ my way into taking formal classes again. That's where the Office of Continuing Education came in and their Bridge Program developed especially for people like me. I can say from experience that going back to school after so long through CEd's Bridge Program is absolutely the best way to go!”

“My first class through the Bridge Program was English 110, which is an English composition class. You are in a class of others who are going back to school after a long break for one reason or another. And the best thing about that is that they are older adults, not 18- or 19-year-olds. That would be too intimidating to try to compete with young adults who don't know anything else but going to school. And one of the best things about this particular class was that the books were on topics that we could relate to ... working and social class. This class prepares you for writing English papers and, more importantly, how to research information to prepare your paper. It also teaches you how to cite the publications that you researched to write your paper. I certainly didn't remember any of that from high school!”
“It was fairly easy and Kathy Kramer, my advisor, is so down to earth and puts you at ease so quickly because I was nervous about the whole process and didn't know what to expect. All I did was call CEd and make an appointment to see an advisor. They tell you exactly what documents you will need (which are very few) and then she talks with you to find out why you want to go back, whether you want to pursue a degree, or just to take some classes. As far as enrolling in my first class, Kathy actually did that for me. But I have since enrolled myself into classes using the online scheduling of classes through BuckeyeLink. It is so simple and convenient!”
“I have now taken three full courses through CEd ... one English and two math. I have enjoyed and learned much from all three instructors. But I will have to say that the English 110 instructor was so helpful, so laid back, and interested in us learning, that I thoroughly enjoyed her class. She was the perfect instructor to experience in your first college class. I have even kept in contact with her from time to time, and she has offered to help me out whenever I need it. She actually specializes in folklore, so I've even been thinking about taking one of her classes just to take another one from her.”
“It is the absolutely best way to go back to school, especially if you are like me and it has been 30 years since you've even been in a classroom setting. They are helpful, concerned, and there to give you advice and encouragement!”
“Don't put it off any longer ... go back to school. Take advantage of being an employee of The Ohio State University and being able to take classes for free. Don't miss out on the opportunity to increase your knowledge whether it is for your current line of work, to change your career path, or just to learn something for fun!”
