Collaborations within Ohio State

Within The Ohio State University, the Office of Continuing Education (CEd) Contractual Outreach unit establishes an agreement with an enrollment unit, college and/or academic department for creation and delivery of a customized course. Customized courses are academic classes offered by CEd for undergraduate or graduate credit or no credit to those populations who are not currently Ohio State Columbus campus students. Customized courses provide outreach opportunities for academic units and faculty to offer courses locally, statewide, nationally and/or internationally to nontraditional audiences, such as students at other universities, using a unique fee level and cost recovery mechanism for the offering unit.

Customized courses also afford flexibility to include an external entity, such as a private business or governmental agency, which allows the enrolling unit to develop business partnerships for course offerings. The enrollment population for these business or governmental customized courses often involves professionals from businesses/corporations, government agencies, elementary and secondary schools, medical professions, or a specific group of individuals/students. Grant and private funding may also be sought through outside partnerships to offer customized courses.

Our course formats are endless and vary with the specific requirements of the enrolling unit and may include:

  1. Credit, noncredit or combination program
  2. Graduate or undergraduate courses
  3. Seminars, workshops and short courses
  4. Continuing professional education
  5. Courses delivered on- or off-campus, or on-site at an organization or another location
  6. Electronic delivery
  7. Flexible and convenient scheduling

When preparing to partner with CEd on a course, program, etc., consider the following:

  1. Number of students anticipated
  2. Type of students anticipated (current, former, new, Non-U.S. citizen)
  3. Course and quarter/year to be offered (A call number must be provided before registration.)
  4. Number of credit or noncredit courses to be offered
  5. If credit courses, the amount and kind of hours to be given (undergraduate or graduate)
  6. On-campus or off-campus
  7. Departmental signature designees
  8. Name and contact information of departmental fiscal officer
To schedule an informational meeting with CEd staff to discuss the customized course you have in mind, contact Dr. Darrell Johnson at (614) 292-8860.
