Many career searchers explore new opportunities by perusing classifieds and internet job postings.  When they find an interesting prospect, they may think “I can do that!” or “I’m willing to try that!”   Candidates who fail to show the relevance of their past experiences are often disappointed when they are not interviewed for a position.

If you have been applying for positions, but not getting any response, evaluate your strategies and marketing materials:

Apply only for jobs that are a good fit.  Review the requirements provided in the job posting. Identify the specific set of skills, abilities and personal characteristics that make a candidate “qualified” for the position.  If you do not have what they are seeking, don’t waste your time (or the employer/recruiters time) by applying.

Create a “targeted resume” that focuses on your qualifications relevant to the position and the company.  A generic resume listing former job duties instead of accomplishments and utilizes a format that highlights your weaknesses will not earn you a spot in the next round.

Tailor your resume for each position.  Tell them how you are a good match in the cover letter and provide evidence in the resume.  Do not include information that is not relevant to this position.  Don’t expect the recruiter/employer to figure out what you can do and where you fit in their organization.  Know what they want and need and provide that information early in document.

Focus on your accomplishments.  Listing your duties or responsibilities only tells the employer what you did in former positions.  Identifying your accomplishments showcases what you did well and how you made significant and valuable contributions to the organization.

Job seekers must target their resume and cover letter toward the desired position and highlight their relevant skills, strengths and achievements.  A targeted resume can mean the difference between getting lost in the stack of applications and getting a call for an interview.  Clients purchasing the Gray Resume Assistance package work with CEO staff  to create a resume that showcases their qualifications.  For more information, contact the CEO at 614-292-3503, 292-8493 or careerexploration@ced.osu.edu.

Quote of the Month

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy."  ~Dale Carnegie

Leaving a position you’ve held for a long time can be scary.  It may seem easier to stay with what you know rather than take a risk.  But if you are dissatisfied with your career and ready for a change, take action! Start with small steps rather than giant leaps.  Assess your skills, strengths, and interests.  Explore different occupations.  Expand your network of contacts.  Don’t let doubt and fear keep you from reaching your career goals.

Nonprofit Leadership Certification

Most professionals focus on climbing the career ladder, but not everyone wants to be promoted.  According to a recent survey by Robert Half International, 71 percent of workers polled said they don’t want their manager’s job. However, if you excel in your current role, it’s likely you’ll be offered a promotion in the future.  Turning down an opportunity with greater responsibilities and higher visibility may give your company the impression that you lack motivation or drive. Make sure your supervisor knows you take the offer seriously, but emphasize how much you enjoy and excel in your current role. If you handle the situation with creativity, honesty and diplomacy, staying put doesn’t have to negatively impact your standing in the organization.
