Congratulations!! Your inspiring resume and networking activities have resulted in an invitation to interview for your “dream job.” Employers consider interview performance to be the most important hiring criteria. The interviewer wants to identify the applicant’s skills and qualifications relevant to the position. Your goal is to understand the employer’s concerns and confidently communicate your skills and abilities.

Be Prepared – Research the company to evaluate the corporate culture and the qualifications the employer wants. Obtain the complete name and title of the person who will conduct the interview, and the address, directions to, and parking information of the location.

Be Conservative –The first thing a potential employer sees at an interview is your attire. Plan your wardrobe ahead and arrive early enough to check your grooming when you get to your destination.  Your clothing, make-up and jewelry should be conservative and comfortable.

Be on Time – Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled interview. Use this time to focus, review your resume, and check your appearance.

Be Enthusiastic – Be prepared to showcase your talents and accomplishments. This is your opportunity to shine, so don’t be modest.

Be Honest – Don’t exaggerate your skills or abilities; it is expected that some training will be required. Employers have the right to terminate employees when they discover the inaccuracies.

Be Professional – Use a firm handshake and direct eye contact to show your confidence. Monitor your body language and keep the conversation relevant to your qualifications.

Be a Team Player – Employers are looking for candidates who will be a good fit for their organization. Provide examples of collaborative projects and your ability to get along with others.

Be Polite – End the interview with a “thank you” and handshake. Send a note thanking the interviewer and confirming your interest in the position.

BUCKEYE JOB BOARD

The Virtual Job Interview is a simulation of a conversation between a job candidate and an interviewer. The user is asked a typical job interview question by an interviewer in a video clip and is given a choice of responses. Once a selection is made, another video clip of the interviewer responds accordingly! A wide range of questions and answers is explored until ultimately the user is either hired, put on file, or has his or her application torn up on the spot. It also includes video segments on interview preparation, tips for the day of the interview, techniques for handling illegal questions and a review.  Contact the CEO for information on accessing this online workshop for just $25. 614-292-3503 or careerexploration@osu.edu
