Developing a network of family and friends to identify potential opportunities is a great strategy during a career search. Using cyberspace to expand your circle of contacts may seem efficient, but will social networking sites, such as MySpace and Facebook, help you meet your goal of landing a job?
The purpose of career networking is to connect with people who know of employment opportunities in your career field or industry. This can best be done at face-to-face events, such as conferences, professional associations or alumni club meetings. The Buckeye Network online alumni database is available to members of the OSU Alumni Association to make career connections with fellow Buckeyes. (www.ohiostatealumni.org) |
Social networking sites attract millions of visitors each month and provide a lot of opportunities to interact with others. Their purpose is social: meet someone with common interests, locate old friends, find a date. These casual conversations can be fun, but probably will not help you identify job contacts. They may even hurt your chances!
A recent study by ExecuNet executive search firm found that 77% of recruiters run online searches to screen applicants and 35% say candidates have been eliminated based on the information found. Personal information available online can have a detrimental effect on those critical first impressions.
If you use social networking sites, be aware of how little control you have over information you put on the Internet. To protect your image and reduce potential embarrassment, don’t post anything on your profile that you wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see. If available, set your profile to “private” to make it viewable to only friends you give access. Monitor profiles regularly since others may add comments to your profile and photos with your name to their site.
Networking takes time and effort. Don’t sacrifice quality for quantity. Contact the Career Exploration Office today for more networking ideas! 614-292-3503 or 292-8493, careerexploration@osu.edu.

Hiring managers focus on qualifications, personality, and organizational fit when they seek candidates. If you fail to recognize the difference, you will experience limited success in securing a job offer. The Career Exploration Office staff can help you market your skills to focus on what the employer wants.
