Whether
you are looking for a new career or a new position
in your current career field, it is important to find
work that is meaningful and satisfying. Effective
research is the key to identifying the career and
organization that will be the most satisfying for
you personally and professionally. The difference
between career success and failure may depend on how
well you fit within the organizations’ “corporate
culture.”
Corporate
culture is the “personality” of an organization;
the values and beliefs that shape behavior. This may
be expressed through the organization’s mission
statement, the organizational chart, and involvement
in community service projects. It includes the company’s
sense of fairness and respect toward employees. A
company’s culture will directly affect employees
in many ways, including: |
|
 |
Hours
worked per day and per week (flextime, overtime, comp
time, working from home) |
 |
Employee
interaction (degree of competition, hierarchy, accessibility
to administrators,
individual effort or group projects) |
 |
Office
space (cubicles, windows, decorations) |
 |
Dress
code (accepted styles, casual days) |
 |
Employee
benefits (break areas, onsite daycare, exercise facilities,
bonuses) |
 |
Employee
rewards and recognition (personal time off, staff events,
service awards) |
 |
Professional
development opportunities (orientation and training
for new hires, conferences, staff training) |
|
| These
written policies and implied rules can reduce conflict
and improve efficiency within an organization. It is
critical for employees to learn what kind of behaviors
the company rewards. Some companies make an effort to
hire and keep employees who “fit” their
corporate culture. By researching companies during your
career planning process, you can obtain information
about potential employers that will indicate whether
or not they will be satisfying workplaces. |

| The
Virtual Job Interview is a simulation of a conversation
between a job candidate and an interviewer. The user
is asked a typical job interview question by an interviewer
in a video clip and is given a choice of responses.
Once a selection is made, another video clip of the
interviewer responds accordingly. A wide range of questions
and answers is explored until ultimately the user is
either hired, put on file, or has his or her application
torn up on the spot. It also includes video segments
on interview preparation, tips for the day of the interview,
techniques for handling illegal questions and a review.
