During a career transition, information is power. The more you know, the more successful you will be. Conducting research can help you obtain the information that you need at each stage of your career plan.
During the career exploration stage, occupational research can provide key information (such as qualifications and skills needed, salary ranges, geographic considerations, and the outlook) critical during the decision-making process. Identifying key companies (by industry and geographic location) will help you conduct a targeted job search. Developing a resume and cover letter that addresses the specific needs of the organization will increase your chances for obtaining an interview. Preparing for the job interview requires more than a basic knowledge of the organization.
Research can provide general information including the nature of the industry, working conditions, training and advancement, salary and benefits, and the employment outlook. Industry trends can be used to anticipate products or services in greatest demand. New technologies are likely to center on these growth areas.

Once you’ve obtained an overview of the industry, research specific organizations for additional information:

an overview of the company including their product/services, history, financial statistics, and organizational structure
human resource/employment-related information including advancement opportunities, benefits, and work-balance initiatives
information regarding competitors, new products or services in development, and the culture of the organization.
During a career transition, this information can help you determine whether or not the company would be a good fit for you. Mentioning information specific to an organization in a cover letter or during a job interview lets potential employers know that you are interested and enthusiastic.

Employers value job seekers who have taken an interest in their organization. Showcase your knowledge during an interview when asked “So tell me what you know about my company.”

CareerSearch II is a user-friendly database of over 2.3 million companies and recruiting firms. The database can be used to access information by industry, by geographic location and/or by key words. CareerSearch II does not provide lists of companies with active job openings, but it does assist you in identifying lists of potential target companies. It also provides the company address, phone numbers, web site, annual budget, number of employees, company divisions AND the names of senior management. Additional features of the site include a Salary Wizard, Top Rated Cities Guide, and Search the News (for articles containing keywords or specific companies.) CEO clients purchasing the Scarlet or Gray package of career services have access to CareerSearch. For more information on CareerSearch or the career packages, contact the CEO at 614-292-3503 or careerexploration@osu.edu.
The online Virtual Job Interview is a simulation of a conversation between a job candidate and an interviewer. The user is asked a typical job interview question by an interviewer in a video clip and is given a choice of responses. Once a selection is made, another video clip of the interviewer responds accordingly! A wide range of questions and answers is explored until ultimately the user is either hired, put on file, or has his or her application torn up on the spot. It also includes video segments on interview preparation, tips for the day of the interview, techniques for handling illegal questions and a review. Contact the CEO for information on accessing this online workshop for just $25. 614-292-3503 or careerexploration@osu.edu
