Today’s employers have become smarter and more demanding in how they hire new employees. In an effort to hire the best candidate for the position, they may conduct multiple interviews, background investigations, psychological and drug testing, and more extensive reference checks.
Do not underestimate the importance of your professional and personal references! The information a reference provides to a potential employer can be a deciding factor in whether or not you get a job offer.

Ideally, a list of three to five references should be provided to potential employers during the interviewing process. These individuals should be able to discuss your accomplishments, skills, work performance, ethics, and educational background. References should be able to attest to your professional growth within the past seven years. Before listing an individual as a reference you must ask their permission!

At least one reference should be from your current or most recent position. If you are uncomfortable listing current or former supervisors, consider asking a supervisor from another department (who knows your work) or a colleague. Business acquaintances, customers, vendors, and former professors/instructors are other possibilities. If you are unsure of what your reference will say about your work performance, do not list them. Include only those who will say positive comments about you!

When conducting a job search, keep your references informed of your progress. They should have a copy of your current resume for reference. Discuss your career goals with them. Provide information regarding the positions you are seeking and how your qualifications make you the best candidate for that specific position. Be sure to thank your references when your job search is completed, even if they were not contacted.
