Career Summary
December 2006
photo of woman handing resume to man   A great resume provides more than your job history; it should also convince an employer that you have the skills and experience needed to make a contribution to their organization.  Studies have shown that employers spend between 5 and 30 seconds screening resumes for information to catch their attention.

The easiest way to add impact to your resume is through a powerful summary immediately following your contact information. This section (titled “Summary of Qualifications”, “Career Profile”, or “Professional Summary”) highlights your selling points, catches the employer’s attention and immediately demonstrates your value as a candidate.

Your summary section should be four to six sentences long (or 3 to 5 bullet points) including job- and industry-specific keywords.  Focus on “hard skills” as opposed to personal characteristics to demonstrate a match between your qualifications and the position requirements.  Present an overview of your accomplishments, experience, work habits and skills that indicate your ability to contribute value to the organization.

It is imperative that you provide information relevant to the position you are seeking.  Use the job posting to obtain information on credentials the employer is seeking. Research the company organization, products/services, and goals to determine how your experience fits with the organization.

A skills profile can provide a strong focus to the resume, but be sure to support your claims with facts.  Provide specific examples of accomplishments in the experience section of your resume as proof.  The Career Exploration Office can help you develop a targeted resume through the Gray Resume Assistance package.  For more information visit our website at www.careers.ohiostatealumni.org  or call us at 614-292-3503 or 292-8493.

Holiday Networking
Office parties and other social events during the holidays can also be excellent opportunities for networking.  However, networking during the holidays can be quite different from making contacts during the rest of the year; people attend to have fun, so don’t expect to land a job offer.  Keep the conversation more informal and ask, "Would it be okay if I called you after the first of the year?"  For more ideas on developing networking contacts, contact the CEO at careerexploration@osu.edu.
Buckeye Job Board
Savvy job seekers are using the Internet to establish contacts for networking, access occupational information, search for positions, research companies, obtain information on developing resumes, apply for positions, and investigate salaries.  However, many find it difficult to filter through the vast amount of information to find what is useful.  Search by profession, geographic location or keyword to find niche sites that specialize in specific in occupations, industries, or type of job seeker.  The Buckeye Job Board is a job posting site offered through the Career Exploration Office. Ohio State alumni, continuing education students and other clients of the CEO are invited to view career opportunities with employers seeking experienced candidates for open positions. For more information, visit www.careers.ohiostatealumni.org or call 614-292-3503 or 292-8493.
The CEO staff wants to take this opportunity to wish you and your family happy holidays!  We look forward to serving you in 2007!
