The purpose of a cover letter is to let a potential employer know what you can do for them and why you feel you are qualified for a specific position. This letter of introduction highlights your skills and experience relevant to the needs of the employer and asks for consideration or a response.

Cover letters can provide details of positions and/or projects that would be difficult to include on a resume. Describe your skills using concrete examples to provide evidence of your claims. A change in career direction or a gap in employment can be addressed in a positive manner.

It is important to target a specific position in the cover letter. Listing several possibilities may indicate that you are unfocused or desperate. All cover letters (even ones sent via e-mail) should use standard business letter format and should be no more than one page in length.

Every word on your letter should be directly related to the purpose of your letter. Do not include personal information, clichés, or gimmicks as attention getters. Proofread carefully to insure you have no errors (facts, spelling, grammar or typographical.)

Resumes sent with no accompanying cover letter are rarely given serious consideration. An outstanding cover letter can attract the attention of a hiring manager and provide a great introduction for your resume.

The Career Exploration Office offers the Gray Resume Assistance Package which includes one-on-one assistance from a CEO staff member to polish your resume and develop a cover letter that markets your qualifications to potential employers.
