April 2005

Prior to preparing an effective resume, you must determine your personal and professional qualifications. Identifying the skills and qualities you have to offer an employer will assist you in communicating with potential employers.

Employers are seeking three types of skills:
Knowledge-based Skills are the job-related abilities to perform a particular task. These are typically included as minimum qualifications in position postings and include such things as accounting, program development, community relations, teaching, and computer skills. You can acquire these skills through education or on-the-job training.

Self Management Skills are personal traits or attitudes that contribute to your performance and are highly valued by employers. Such things as integrity, honesty, enthusiasm, dependability, patience and independence determine whether your personal style will fit with the company culture.

Transferable Skills can be applied to different work functions and industries. These core skills can be refined by education and experience and will help you develop job resiliency. Long-range career planning should include the increased development of core skills such as written and verbal communication, critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, team building, decision-making, project management, and organizing.
